VOLUNTEER FOUNDER-PRESIDENT RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS AWARD
The 2012 Oregon Governor’s Volunteer Awards honors some of Oregon's most respected individuals and organizations for their commitment to voluntary service benefiting the state and its people. The awards are hosted by the Oregon Volunteers Commission for Voluntary Action and Service with presenting sponsor Wells Fargo. At the 2012 Oregon Governor’s Volunteer Awards Luncheon the Founder and President volunteer of RASIKA, Raman Srinivasan will be recognized as the Outstanding Regional Adult Volunteer. RASIKA will receive $500 as cash award from Wells Fargo.
Raman was one of the main founders of this Portland based educational and cultural organization formed over a decade ago. His sincere passion and commitment to promote the Indian classical arts is evident in the high quality programming presented by Rasika over the years. As a prominent world music and dance presenter in Portland over the past decade, Rasika has been critical in expanding the scope of performance diversity with ethno-music presentations of the highest caliber.
Every organization needs a visionary and a leader to take on challenges and Raman has certainly proven successful in both roles. As much as the careful planning and implementation of the concerts and educational events are vital for the organization, so are marketing and financial efforts. Raman has been the creative marketing person and has done solid financial projections to plan for upcoming seasons. His knowledge of finance, accounting, marketing, and his vast network and liaison with both the artists and touring agents make him the most vital voluntary board member of Rasika. Indeed, he is aptly referred to as ‘Rasika Raman’ by artists, agents and other national organizers. In a small town like Portland, where even main stream presenters are struggling to present concerts and events, Raman has made quite a difference in artistic quality of presentations through this world music organization, presenting over 100 concerts and educational events with critical reviews from the press and public. The organization has added to the rich cultural diversity of the Portland art scene.
Raman has also been successful over the past fourteen years to inspire and lead a small group of volunteers, who share his vision and passion. Although no volunteer has matched his time, commitment and genius foresight, he pulls together a collective effort from these volunteers during concert presentations. He not only donates his time, effort and skills but also donates money to Rasika annually, further supporting the organization. He was invited to receive the ‘Arts in the Community’ award by the Mayor and City of Beaverton in recognition of his services to the local community in 2003. His work to promote Indian arts has also been recognized nationally by an award presented by the South India Fine Arts (SIFA) non-profit Indian organization based in California in 2004. Intel recognized his efforts by selecting him as one of the top five ‘Volunteer Heroes’ in Oregon, the only one in the Arts and Humanities services among the employees nominated for voluntary efforts in Oregon in 2009.
