It is with great sadness that we mourn the demise of Mandolin maestro U. Shrinivas, who passed away Friday morning at a private hospital in Chennai, India.

Shrinivas, a long time associate of Rasika, and close personal friend of Raman Srinivasan, the President and founder of Rasika; impressed everyone with his divinity and humility. A rare combination of a great musician and great human, he started his career as a child and always let the Mandolin speak for him. Never one to lecture people to accept the Mandolin; especially when he started playing it, there was controversy among the Carnatic music pundits about the instrument, he let his music talk and he came to be known as Mandolin Shrinivas!

Raman has presented his concerts since 2004, and Shrinivas' US/Canada tours in 2006, 2010 and recently as 2013 very successfully. Our association with the legend has been very close for past ten years. His tours have been the most successful tours for Rasika and he also accepted to be the Honorary President of our music school and wrote an article about the importance of Sadhana (practice) for music students for the Rasika music school book.

It is a great loss for our music world.

In words of Raman Srinivasan: My dear brother Shrinivas....It is the greatest loss to Indian music. I have known Shrinivas for more than 10 years personally and i have not come across another human who is so disciplined and respectful. It is so sad..i don't have more words now. Our condolences to his brother Rajesh, and Shrinivas family. Raman & Jayanthi
