rasika is proud to present a Bharatha Natyam dance ballet by Ananda Shankar Jayant & 10 member dance troupe of professional dancers from India.
Dr Ananda Shankar Jayant, is celebrated as one of India’s leading classical dancers, choreographers and dance scholars. Performing in the two classical styles of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, Ananda, imbues to the technique and grammar of her dance, a sparkling quality that bristles with life. Dancing with joy, Ananda, has polished her art to a fine pitch, where, the rigor of her training meets a finely tuned intellect that effortlessly bridges traditional structures with contemporary inputs.
Ananda holds a Masters degree in Ancient Indian History (where she topped her university), a M.Phil in Art History and a Ph.D in Tourism. She actively lectures on breast cancer support and advocacy issues, having successfully battled the illness over the last two years.
The members of the Shankarananda Kalakshetra ensemble, are dancers trained by Ananda Shankar Jayant, and have forged a reputation for their extraordinary group productions. They will be presenting Nrityopahara for Portland audiences.
Nrityopahara is a collage of group choreographic works, which bows to the rich and vibrant culture that is India, through the footsteps of dance and the cadences of music, and takes the audience on a colorful, enchanting, vibrant, and soulful journey into the corporeal and esoteric beauty and quintessential core of India. Nrityopahara – comprises of some of Shankarananda Kalakshetra’s signature short group dance productions, strung together, and is performed by an ensemble of 10 dancers with exquisite lighting and costuming.
